An Island Apart

Fishers Island sits in a unique spot. Although it's part of New York, a glance at a map shows it's much closer to Connecticut, just two miles off its southeastern coast. The island is about 11 miles from Long Island's own Orient Point, separated by the waters of Long Island Sound.

It's a slender strip of land, stretching roughly nine miles from end to end but only about a mile across at its widest point. This gives it a total area of just over four square miles. Its position at the eastern mouth of Long Island Sound places it right where the Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean, a key factor in shaping its character.

The island's geography creates a distinct identity, legally part of New York but physically nestled against the coast of New England.

Sculpted by Ice

The landscape of Fishers Island owes its existence to immense glaciers. During the last ice age, a period known as the Wisconsin glaciation, massive sheets of ice crept across North America. As these glaciers advanced and later retreated, they acted like giant bulldozers, scraping up rock, sand, and clay and depositing this material elsewhere.

till

noun

A mix of unsorted sediment, from clay to boulders, deposited directly by a glacier.

Fishers Island is essentially a pile of this glacial till, a long ridge called a moraine. This geological history explains its topography. Instead of flat, sandy shores typical of many coastal islands, Fishers Island features rolling hills, rocky coastlines, and a rugged terrain. The glaciers left behind a dramatic and varied landscape packed into a small area.

The Ocean's Influence

Being surrounded by water has a major impact on the island's climate. The Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound act as natural temperature regulators. Water heats up and cools down much more slowly than land does.

In the summer, the surrounding water is cooler than the mainland, which helps keep the island from getting too hot. Breezes coming off the ocean provide a natural air conditioning. Conversely, in the winter, the water retains heat longer than the land, which leads to milder temperatures compared to nearby inland areas. This effect is known as a maritime climate.

SeasonFishers Island (Maritime Climate)Inland Location (Continental Climate)
SummerCooler, with ocean breezesHotter and more humid
WinterMilder, less extreme coldColder, more prone to deep freezes

This climate moderation means fewer extreme temperature swings throughout the year. It creates a distinct environment that affects everything from the local plant life to the daily lives of its residents.
