Introduction to Firewalls

Your Network's Bouncer

Think of a firewall as a digital bouncer at the door of your network. It stands between your private, internal network (like your home Wi-Fi) and the public internet. Just like a bouncer checks IDs against a guest list, a firewall inspects all the data trying to get in or out.

This data, called traffic, is made up of small pieces called packets. The firewall examines these packets and decides whether to let them pass or block them, based on a set of security rules. If a packet looks suspicious or comes from a known troublemaker, the firewall denies it entry. If it's from a trusted source and follows the rules, it's allowed through.

This process works both ways. Firewalls monitor outgoing traffic too, preventing malicious software on your computer from sending your data out to unauthorized places on the internet. It’s a two-way security gate.
