The Fire Triangle

Every fire, from a lit match to a forest blaze, needs three things to exist: heat, fuel, and oxygen. This trio is known as the fire triangle. If you remove any one of these components, the fire cannot start or will be extinguished.

Let's break them down:

  • Heat: This is the energy needed to raise the fuel to its ignition temperature. A spark, a flame, or even friction can provide the necessary heat.
  • Fuel: This is any combustible material. It can be a solid like wood or paper, a liquid like gasoline, or a gas like propane.
  • Oxygen: Fires need an oxidizing agent to sustain the chemical reaction. The air around us is about 21% oxygen, which is more than enough for most fires to burn.

Think of it like a three-legged stool. If you take away any one leg, the stool falls over. The same goes for fire.

The Fourth Element

The fire triangle is a great model, but it's missing one piece of the puzzle. To understand how a fire keeps burning, we need to add a fourth element: the chemical chain reaction. This turns our triangle into a three-dimensional pyramid, or a tetrahedron.

This chain reaction is the process of combustion itself. As fuel burns, it produces heat, which in turn ignites more fuel, creating a self-sustaining cycle. The heat, fuel, and oxygen aren't just sitting next to each other; they are actively interacting in a continuous chemical process.

Oxygen, heat, and fuel are frequently referred to as the “fire triangle.” Add in the fourth element, the chemical reaction, and you actually have a fire “tetrahedron.” The important thing to remember is: take any of these four things away, and you will not have a fire or the fire will be extinguished.

Many fire extinguishers work by interrupting this chain reaction. For example, some chemical agents don't cool the fire or remove oxygen but instead stop the chemical process, causing the fire to die out instantly.

How a Fire Grows

A fire isn't static. It evolves over time, moving through predictable stages. Understanding these stages helps firefighters anticipate a fire's behavior and attack it effectively.

1. Ignition This is the beginning, when heat, fuel, and oxygen combine to start the combustion process. It might be as small as a spark catching on a piece of paper.

2. Growth The fire starts to consume the initial fuel source and spreads to nearby combustibles. A plume of hot gas rises, heating materials above it. If the fire is in a confined space, like a room, the entire room and its contents can heat up. This is where a dangerous event called flashover can occur, where everything in the room ignites almost simultaneously.

3. Fully Developed At this stage, the fire has consumed all available fuel and is burning at its maximum temperature. The heat released is immense, and the fire is consuming oxygen at a rapid rate. This is the most dangerous phase of the fire.

4. Decay As the fuel is consumed or the oxygen level drops, the fire begins to diminish. The temperature decreases, and the fire eventually smolders out. Even in this stage, danger remains. A sudden influx of oxygen, like from a door being opened, can cause a dangerous backdraft, where the fire gases reignite explosively.
