When fifth graders walk into math class, seeing a page full of abstract equations can trigger instant anxiety. Instead, presenting them with a colorful, hanging mobile puzzle bypasses formal notation entirely. These puzzles establish a conceptual foundation for and algebraic balance, relying on a student's intuitive sense of physical weight and symmetry.

To design an effective 'Do Now' activity, you can present a simple mobile where the total weight is known, and different shapes suspend from the branches. For example, if a mobile has a total weight of 20, the left arm and the right arm must each carry a weight of 10 to remain perfectly level. If the left arm holds two identical blue stars, students instantly deduce that each star must weigh 5, using logical reasoning before they ever learn to isolate a variable.

By starting with these visual puzzles, fifth graders learn to treat both sides of an equation as equal partners. It makes the concept of keeping both sides of an equation balanced feel natural and necessary.
