Understanding Options

What Is an Option?

Every decision you make, from choosing your breakfast to picking a career, starts with the same thing: options. An option is simply one of several possibilities you can choose from. Think of them as different paths you can take to reach a destination.

Option

noun

A choice or possibility that can be selected from a set of alternatives.

Options are all around us. When you're at a coffee shop, your options might be a latte, a cappuccino, or a black coffee. When your phone contract is up, your options could be to renew with your current provider, switch to a new one, or buy a phone outright. Each represents a different course of action.

You're standing at a crossroads. The path to the left is well-paved but leads somewhere familiar. The path to the right is a dirt trail heading into the woods. These two paths are your options.

Why Options Matter

Identifying your options is the first and most critical step in making a good decision. Without options, there is no choice to make. You're simply forced down a single path. The more potential choices you can identify, the more control you have over the outcome.

Imagine you need to get to a meeting across town. If you only think of one option, driving, you might get stuck in traffic. But if you brainstorm other options—taking the subway, riding a bike, using a ride-sharing service—you empower yourself to pick the best path based on factors like time, cost, and weather. Generating a variety of options prevents you from getting stuck and often reveals better solutions you hadn't initially considered.

Recognizing and evaluating options is a foundational skill. In more formal settings, like business or project management, this step is often called "Discovering the Alternatives."
