Introduction to Gordon Korman

The Accidental Author

How many authors can say they published their first book at age 14? Gordon Korman can. His writing career started with a 7th-grade English assignment. The task was simple: write anything you want for the rest of the semester. Korman, a self-described class clown, decided to write a funny story about kids at a boarding school.

That story became This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall!, the first in a series that would launch an incredible career. After finishing the assignment, he sent his manuscript to Scholastic, the publisher that handled the school's book orders. They liked it so much, they offered him a contract.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1963, Korman didn't set out to be a writer. It was his track and field coach, who had to fill in as the English teacher, who gave him the freedom to create. By the time he graduated high school, Korman had published five books. He went on to study film and writing at New York University but continued to write a book a year throughout his college days.

Humor and Heart

Korman's writing is known for its signature blend of humor, adventure, and relatable characters. His stories often feature kids and teens who find themselves in bizarre, chaotic situations. The plots are fast-paced and packed with witty dialogue and slapstick comedy.

But his books aren't just for laughs. Beneath the humor, Korman explores themes that resonate with young readers: friendship, teamwork, identity, and the challenge of doing the right thing. His characters feel real because they make mistakes, face consequences, and grow from their experiences. This combination of comedy and genuine emotion is what makes his work so enduring.

Korman’s stories often feel like a roller coaster ride—full of twists, turns, and laugh-out-loud moments.
