What is a Tachograph?

Think of a tachograph as a smart logbook for a commercial truck or bus. It’s a device fitted inside the vehicle that automatically records key information about a journey. It tracks the vehicle's speed, how far it's gone, and most importantly, what the driver is doing.

Its main purpose is to monitor and enforce rules about driving time. These regulations exist to make sure drivers get enough rest and don't spend too many hours behind the wheel without a break. By creating a reliable record, the tachograph helps ensure that both drivers and their employers are sticking to the rules.

A tired driver is a dangerous driver. Fatigue slows reaction times and impairs judgment, turning a multi-ton truck into a significant road hazard. The core mission of the tachograph is to prevent this by enforcing mandatory rest periods.

The Basic Principles

So, how does it work? A tachograph is connected to the vehicle's gearbox, allowing it to automatically record driving activity whenever the vehicle is in motion. When the vehicle stops, the recording of 'driving time' also stops.

However, a driver's work isn't just driving. They might be loading or unloading cargo, waiting for instructions, or taking a rest break. The driver manually selects their current status using a set of standard symbols on the device. This creates a complete picture of their workday.

The combination of automatic vehicle data and manual driver input creates an accurate, legally recognized record. This data can be checked by transport authorities to verify compliance, making the system a cornerstone of modern road transport regulation.
