Introduction to Cybersecurity

What is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, and data from damage, theft, or unauthorized access. Think of it like securing a physical office. We lock the doors, use access cards, and have a front desk to keep unauthorized people out. In the digital world, cybersecurity does the same thing for our company's information.

At WAISLdigital.com, our data is one of our most valuable assets. It includes everything from client information and financial records to our own internal projects. A security failure can lead to data loss, financial penalties, and damage to our reputation. Protecting this information isn't just a job for the IT department, it's a responsibility we all share.

Common Threats to Watch For

Cyber threats come in many forms, but most rely on tricking people into making a mistake. Understanding the most common tactics is the first step in defending against them. Let's look at three you're most likely to encounter: malware, phishing, and social engineering.

Malware

noun

Short for malicious software, it's any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client, or computer network.

Malware is an umbrella term for computer viruses, spyware, and ransomware. It can get into our systems if someone clicks a bad link, downloads a compromised file, or even inserts an infected USB drive. Once inside, it can do anything from secretly logging your keystrokes to locking up the entire network until a ransom is paid. The best defense is caution. Always be skeptical of unexpected downloads and attachments.

Phishing

noun

The fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords, by disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Phishing is one of the most common ways attackers get in. It usually arrives as an email that looks official, but it's a fake designed to steal your credentials. These emails create a sense of urgency to trick you into acting without thinking.

Notice the urgent tone and the request to click a link. A real notification would never ask you to enter your password via an email link. Always go directly to the official website by typing the address yourself. When in doubt, contact the IT department.

Social engineering

noun

The use of deception to manipulate individuals into divulging confidential or personal information that may be used for fraudulent purposes.

Social engineering is the human side of hacking. It's not about code, it's about manipulation. Phishing is one type of social engineering, but it can also happen over the phone or in person. An attacker might call pretending to be a new employee who needs help accessing a file, or someone from IT asking for your password to fix an "issue." Remember, our IT staff will never ask for your password. Be wary of any unusual requests for information, no matter how convincing the person seems.

The First Line of Defense

Employees are the first line of defense against cyber attacks.

Technology can only do so much. Firewalls and antivirus software are essential, but they can't stop an attacker who has been willingly handed the keys. You are the most important part of our security.

Your role is simple: be vigilant. Think before you click. Question unusual requests. If an email, attachment, or link seems even slightly suspicious, don't open it. Report it to the IT department immediately. A moment of caution can prevent a major incident that could disrupt our operations, cost the company significant money, and compromise the trust our clients place in us. By staying alert, you help protect yourself, your colleagues, and the entire organization.

Let's review these concepts to make sure they're clear.
