Flat Shapes

Shapes are all around us. Some shapes are flat. We call these 2D shapes. Think of a piece of paper. It is flat. It is a 2D shape.

2D Shape

A flat shape that has only two dimensions, like length and width.

The Circle

Let's look at a circle. A circle is perfectly round. It has no straight sides and no corners.

We say: This is a circle.

Many things we see every day are circles. A clock on the wall is often a circle. A coin is a circle. A plate for food can be a circle.

This is a circle. It is round.

The Square

Now let's look at a square. A square has four straight sides. All four sides are the same length. A square also has four corners.

We say: This is a square.

You can find squares around you, too. A window in a house can be a square. A tile on the floor is often a square.

This is a square. It has four equal sides and four corners.
