What Is Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resin isn’t a single substance you can just pour out of a bottle. It’s a two-part system that undergoes a chemical reaction to become the hard, durable material many people know. Think of it like baking a cake: you mix wet ingredients (the resin) with a catalyst like baking soda (the hardener), and heat transforms them into something completely new.

Epoxy is made of two parts: a liquid resin and a liquid hardener. When mixed, they create a solid.

The magic is in the chemistry. The resin part is a type of polymer, a large molecule made of many repeating smaller units. The hardener, or curing agent, contains molecules that react with the resin. When you mix them, they start linking together, forming a strong, interconnected network in a process called polymerization. This reaction generates heat and transforms the two liquids into a rigid, plastic-like solid.

Because this process creates a material that sets permanently and cannot be melted down and reshaped, epoxy is known as a thermosetting polymer.
