The Journey of Electricity
Flipping a light switch is simple, but the journey electricity takes to get to that switch is a massive, coordinated effort. It involves three main steps: generation, transmission, and distribution. Think of it like a nationwide delivery service for power.
First, electricity is made. This is generation. Power plants create electricity using various sources, from burning natural gas and coal to splitting atoms in nuclear reactors or harnessing wind, solar, and water power.
Once generated, the electricity can't just travel through regular wires. It's sent through high-voltage power lines—the kind you see stretched between huge metal towers across the countryside. This is transmission. The voltage is increased dramatically to push the power over long distances with minimal energy loss, like using high pressure to send water through a very long hose.
Finally, as the electricity gets closer to towns and cities, it needs to be made safe for use in homes and businesses. This is distribution. The high-voltage power is sent to local substations, which are like regional post offices. Here, transformers step the voltage down. From the substation, smaller power lines carry the electricity to your neighborhood, where another transformer on a utility pole or in a green box on the ground steps it down one last time before it enters your home.
Who Runs the Grid?
The companies managing this complex system are called electric utilities, but they don't all operate the same way. There are three main types, each with a different structure and mission.

Public utilities, often called municipals, are run by government bodies like a city council. Since they don't have to generate profits for shareholders, their rates can sometimes be lower. Electric cooperatives were mostly formed to bring power to rural areas that IOUs found unprofitable to serve. The customers are the owners, so any excess revenue is often returned to them.
Who Makes the Rules?
An army of people and complex machinery work to keep your lights on, but who makes sure it's all done safely and fairly? That's the job of regulatory bodies. They set the rules for the power industry.
Two of the most important regulators in North America are FERC and NERC.
FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is a U.S. government agency. It primarily regulates the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil. If power crosses state lines, FERC is involved in setting the rates and terms. They act like a referee for the wholesale energy market, ensuring fair competition.
NERC, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, has a different job. Its mission is to ensure the reliability and security of the bulk power system—the interconnected network of transmission lines across North America. NERC develops and enforces standards for how power systems should be operated and maintained to prevent blackouts and keep the grid stable.
Energy utilities need to ensure grid stability in the face of supply and demand peaks caused by factors like microgeneration and digital mobility, while continuing to meet new regulatory and reporting requirements.
