eBay Dropshipping Basics

What is eBay Dropshipping?

Dropshipping is a way to run an online store without ever touching the products you sell. When a customer buys something from you, you purchase the item from a third party, and they ship it directly to the customer. You are the storefront, but someone else handles the inventory and shipping.

Dropshipping is a business model where you sell products online without ever holding inventory.

Think of yourself as a connector. You connect a customer who wants a product with a supplier who has that product. Your job is to manage your eBay listing and provide customer service. The supplier's job is to store the goods, pack them up, and ship them out. This process involves a few key steps.

In this model, two main players make everything happen:

  • The Seller (You): You create the eBay listing, set the price, market the product, and handle all communication with the customer.
  • The Supplier: This is the company that holds the inventory. They are responsible for packing the product and shipping it to your customer on your behalf.

eBay's Rules of the Game

eBay allows dropshipping, but they have a very important policy you must follow. You are responsible for the safe delivery of the item within the timeframe stated in your listing and for the buyer's overall satisfaction with their purchase.

The critical rule is about where you get your products from. eBay requires you to fulfill your orders from a legitimate wholesale supplier.

wholesale

adjective

The business of selling goods in large quantities and at low prices, typically to be sold on at a profit by another retailer.

A wholesale supplier buys products directly from manufacturers in bulk. They are not a retailer selling to the public. By working with a wholesaler, you are essentially acting as their retail partner. This is the only form of dropshipping eBay permits.

If you use dropshipping, you're still responsible for the safe delivery of the item within the time frame you state in your listing, and for the buyer's overall satisfaction. Fulfilling orders directly from a wholesale supplier is allowed on eBay.

The Retail Arbitrage Trap

The most common mistake new sellers make is confusing dropshipping with retail arbitrage. Retail arbitrage is when you list an item on eBay, and after it sells, you go to another retailer's website (like Amazon, Walmart, or another eBay seller) and have them ship the item to your customer.

This is strictly prohibited by eBay.

Why is this a problem? It creates a poor customer experience. Imagine ordering a product from an eBay seller and having it arrive in an Amazon box with an Amazon receipt. It's confusing, can lead to pricing disputes, and makes it seem like you're just a middleman adding no value. It also causes issues with inventory and shipping that you can't control.

Here’s how the two models stack up:

FeatureWholesale Dropshipping (Allowed)Retail Arbitrage (Not Allowed)

Sticking to wholesale suppliers is the only way to build a sustainable and compliant dropshipping business on eBay. It ensures a professional experience for your customers and keeps your account in good standing.
