SEO Fundamentals

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of making your online store more visible in search engine results. When people search for products you sell, you want your store to appear as high up on the results page as possible.

Think of your e-commerce site like a physical store. If your shop is on a busy street, more people will see it and walk in. SEO is the digital equivalent of picking a prime location. It doesn’t rely on paid ads. Instead, it focuses on earning traffic through free, or organic, search results.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is crucial for driving organic traffic to your online store.

How Search Engines Find Your Store

To understand SEO, you first need to know how search engines like Google work. They have a three-step process for finding and organizing information from all over the internet.

Your goal with SEO is to make it as easy as possible for search engines to crawl, index, and rank your store as a top result for relevant searches. This is done through three main areas of focus.

The Three Pillars of SEO

SEO strategy is often broken down into three core components: on-page, off-page, and technical SEO. Each one plays a distinct role in improving your site's performance in search results.

On-Page SEO

This involves everything on your actual website pages. For an e-commerce store, this means optimizing things like your product titles, descriptions, and images. The goal is to signal to search engines what your pages are about and which search terms, or keywords, they should rank for.

Good on-page SEO also creates a better experience for your customers, making it easier for them to find what they're looking for.

When we talk about search engine optimization (SEO), we’re referring to the process of improving and upgrading a product’s detail page to improve visibility, click-through-rate (CTR), and, ultimately, conversion.

Off-Page SEO

This refers to actions taken outside of your own website to impact your rankings. It's largely about building your store's authority and reputation. The primary way this is done is by getting other reputable websites to link to your store.

Each link from another site acts like a vote of confidence, telling search engines that your store is a trustworthy and valuable resource. This can come from product reviews on blogs, mentions in online magazines, or partnerships with other brands.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO focuses on the backend of your website to ensure search engines can crawl and index it without any issues. It’s the foundation upon which your on-page and off-page efforts are built.

This includes things like your site's speed, its mobile-friendliness, and its overall structure. A technically sound website provides a good experience for both search engine bots and human visitors.

Technical SEO ensures that search engines can effectively crawl, index, and understand your website.

A good SEO strategy balances all three pillars. A fast, well-built website with great content and strong authority from other sites has the best chance of ranking at the top of search results and driving sales.
