Doughnut Economics Explained
Introduction to Doughnut Economics
The Doughnut Model
What if the goal of economics wasn't endless growth, but balance? That's the question at the heart of Doughnut Economics, a framework developed by economist Kate Raworth. It offers a new way to think about what a successful economy looks like.
Doughnut Economics, conceived by economist and academic Kate Raworth, challenges the conventional wisdom of endless growth.
The model gets its name from its shape. Imagine a doughnut. The goal is for all of humanity to live in the doughnut itself—not in the hole, and not outside the doughnut. It’s a simple picture for a powerful idea: meeting the needs of all people within the means of the living planet.
The Inner and Outer Rings
The doughnut has two boundaries: an inner ring and an outer ring.
The inner ring is the Social Foundation. This represents the essentials everyone needs to lead a good life, like access to food, clean water, education, and healthcare. When people don't have these things, they fall short and end up in the hole in the middle of the doughnut.
The outer ring is the Ecological Ceiling. This represents the planetary boundaries—the limits of Earth's systems that we cannot safely cross. If we push past these limits, we cause environmental breakdown, like climate change, biodiversity loss, and ocean acidification. This is called an "overshoot."
The goal is simple: ensure no one is left in the hole, while making sure we don't overshoot the planet's ecological limits.
The Safe and Just Space
The doughnut itself—the space between the social foundation and the ecological ceiling—is where humanity can thrive. It is the sweet spot. In this space, we can meet our needs and wants without putting the planet's health at risk.
Between these two boundaries lies a doughnut-shaped space that is both ecologically safe and socially just: a space in which humanity can thrive.
This framework shifts the focus of economics. Instead of measuring success by growth alone, it asks us to measure how well we are providing for people while protecting our environment. It’s a compass for creating an economy that works for everyone, now and in the future.
