Introduction to Innovation

What is Innovation?

Innovation isn't just about inventing something completely new, like the lightbulb or the internet. It's about applying new ideas to create value. This can mean improving a process, designing a better service, or creating a new product that solves a problem in a novel way.

innovation

noun

The practical implementation of ideas that result in the introduction of new goods or services or improvement in offering goods or services.

Think of it as the bridge between a raw idea and a real-world impact. An idea in a notebook is just potential. Innovation is the work that turns that potential into something people can use.

Business innovation is the creative process for introducing new ideas, workflows, processes, services or products.

Types of Innovation

Not all innovation looks the same. While there are many ways to categorize it, a useful starting point is to distinguish between two major types: sustaining and disruptive.

TypeDescriptionExample
SustainingImproves existing products for existing customers.A new smartphone model with a better camera.
DisruptiveCreates new markets or value networks, eventually displacing established leaders.Digital photography replacing film photography.

Sustaining innovation is what we see most often. Companies are constantly working to make their products a little faster, more efficient, or more user-friendly. These are important, incremental changes that keep customers happy and help a company stay competitive in its current market.

Think of sustaining innovation as playing the same game, but better. Disruptive innovation creates a whole new game.

Disruptive innovation, on the other hand, often starts by serving a market that established companies ignore. It might offer a simpler, cheaper, or more convenient alternative that initially doesn't appeal to the mainstream. Over time, however, these innovations improve and begin to attract the mainstream market, eventually displacing the old technology or business model.

The Role in Business

In the world of business and technology, innovation is the engine of growth and survival. A company that doesn't innovate risks becoming irrelevant. Blockbuster didn't adapt to the rise of streaming and eventually failed. Kodak, a giant in film photography, struggled to transition to the digital era it helped create.

Innovation allows businesses to:

  • Stay Competitive: Develop new products and features that attract customers.
  • Increase Efficiency: Find better, faster, or cheaper ways to operate.
  • Adapt to Change: Respond to shifting customer needs and new technologies.
  • Create New Markets: Open up entirely new areas for growth.

Technology is a massive catalyst for this process. Advances in areas like artificial intelligence, connectivity, and data processing create fertile ground for both sustaining and disruptive innovations across all industries.
