Dirtywave M8 Tracker Music Production
Introduction to M8 Tracker
Meet the M8 Tracker
The Dirtywave M8 is a powerful, pocket-sized music-making machine. It's what's known as a "tracker." If you're new to that term, don't worry. A tracker is just a type of music sequencer that displays music in a top-to-down grid. You input notes and commands on this grid to build a song, step by step.
This style of music creation was popular on older computers and even the original Gameboy, which is where the M8 gets its inspiration—specifically from an application called Little Sound DJ. The M8 takes that old-school workflow and packs it into a modern, high-quality device you can take anywhere.
Hardware and Design
The first thing you'll notice about the M8 is its build. It has a durable, machined aluminum body that feels solid in your hands. The front is dominated by a crisp 3.5-inch IPS display, which is bright and easy to read even in different lighting conditions.
The M8 isn't just for sequencing pre-made sounds. It has a built-in microphone for sampling, allowing you to record audio directly into the device. For connecting to other gear, you have a 3.5mm TRS MIDI input and output, a stereo audio input, and a stereo headphone output.
Everything is powered by a battery that lasts for hours, and it recharges through a standard USB-C port, which also handles data transfer.
Sequencer Power
Under the hood, the M8's sequencer is surprisingly deep. It gives you eight monophonic tracks to work with. A monophonic track can only play one note at a time, which encourages you to think creatively about melody, basslines, and percussion.
You arrange your ideas into patterns, and the M8 can hold up to 255 of them in a single song. These patterns can be chained together to create full, complex compositions. It also supports full MIDI input and output, meaning you can use it to control other synthesizers or have an external keyboard control the M8's internal sounds.
