Understanding Scanning Basics

From Paper to Pixels

You've finished your watercolor painting. The colors are just right, and the textures feel alive. Now, how do you get that beautiful, physical artwork into a digital format for a children's book without losing its magic? The answer is scanning. A good scan is the bridge between your traditional art and the digital world. The goal is to create a digital copy that's as faithful to the original as possible, capturing every subtle wash and detail.

Choosing the Right Scanner

For watercolor illustrations, a flatbed scanner is your best tool. Unlike sheet-fed scanners that pull paper through rollers, a flatbed has a glass plate where you lay your artwork flat. This protects your delicate paper and ensures a sharp, even scan.

When looking at scanners, pay attention to two key specs: optical resolution and color depth. Optical resolution, measured in DPI (dots per inch), tells you how much detail the scanner can physically capture. Color depth, measured in bits, indicates how many colors the scanner can see. For watercolor, you want a scanner with a high optical resolution (at least 600 DPI) and a color depth of 24-bit or higher to capture the subtle shifts in tone and hue.

Optimal Scan Settings

Your scanner’s software will offer several options. Getting them right from the start will save you a lot of editing time later.

Always scan at a higher resolution than you think you'll need. You can always make an image smaller without losing quality, but you can't make it bigger.

Resolution: Print publishing requires high-resolution images, typically 300 DPI at the final print size. However, it's best to scan at a much higher resolution, like 600 DPI or even 1200 DPI. This gives you a large, detailed master file. You can scale it down if needed, and it provides flexibility for cropping or using the art for larger formats, like a poster or a two-page spread.

Color Mode: You'll likely see options for RGB (Red, Green, Blue) and CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). Always scan in RGB. Scanners capture light in RGB, so this mode will grab the widest possible range of colors. While books are printed in CMYK, the conversion from RGB to CMYK should be one of the final steps in your editing process, not the first.

File Format: The format you save your scan in matters. The two most common choices are TIFF and JPG.

Saving as a TIFF ensures that all the data captured by the scanner is preserved. You can edit and re-save the file without degrading its quality.

Getting the Best Scan

Before you begin, make sure the scanner's glass surface is perfectly clean. Any dust or smudges will show up in your scan. Place your artwork face down on the glass, making sure it's straight. You can use the edges of the scanner as a guide.

Close the lid gently to avoid moving the paper. It's a good idea to do a preview scan first to ensure the alignment and settings look right before committing to a high-resolution scan, which can take a few minutes.

One common challenge is preserving the unique texture of watercolor paper. The bright light of a scanner can sometimes flatten the appearance of the paper's tooth, or surface texture. A high-resolution scan is the best way to capture these fine details. If the colors in the scan look a little washed out compared to the original, don't worry. This is normal. Most scanner software offers basic brightness and contrast adjustments, but it's better to make these changes later in a dedicated image-editing program where you have more control.
