For example, you might get an email saying your package delivery has failed. It provides a link to reschedule. You click, enter your name, address, and maybe a small "redelivery fee" with your credit card. The package isn't real, but the attacker now has your information.

Malware

Short for "malicious software," it is any software intentionally designed to cause disruption to a computer, server, client, or computer network, leak private information, gain unauthorized access to information or systems, or deprive a user of access to their information.

Malware is a broad term for harmful software that can infect your devices. This includes viruses that damage files, spyware that secretly records what you do, and ransomware that locks your files until you pay a fee. Malware often spreads through suspicious downloads, email attachments, or by exploiting security weaknesses in outdated software.

Finally, there are data breaches. Unlike phishing or malware, a data breach isn't usually an attack on you directly. Instead, it's an attack on a company or organization that holds your data. Attackers break into the company's servers and steal customer information, which can include names, email addresses, passwords, and even financial details.

The Consequences

The impact of poor digital security can range from a minor annoyance to a major life disruption. If your information is stolen, you could become a victim of identity theft. Thieves might use your details to open credit cards, take out loans, or file fraudulent tax returns in your name. Cleaning up this kind of mess can take months or even years.

Even a simple account takeover can be damaging. Imagine an attacker getting into your primary email.
