What Is Digital Security?

Think of digital security as the lock on your front door, but for your online life. It's the practice of protecting your digital information, devices, and identity from being stolen, damaged, or used without your permission. Every time you go online, you leave behind traces of data—from the websites you visit to the information you share on social media. Digital security is about controlling who gets to see and use that data.

At its core, good security aims to achieve three things:

Confidentiality is about privacy. It means ensuring that your information is only accessible to people who are authorized to see it. It's like whispering a secret to a friend and trusting they won't tell anyone else.

Integrity means your data is accurate and trustworthy. It hasn't been tampered with or altered without your knowledge. Think of it as a sealed letter—you know the contents are exactly what the sender wrote.

Availability means you can access your information and systems when you need to. It's the digital equivalent of your key always working in your door lock.

Common Threats to Watch For

Bad actors on the internet have a variety of tools to try and compromise your security. Understanding their methods is the first step toward defending against them.

Phishing is one of the most common attacks. It's a fraudulent attempt, usually made through email, to trick you into revealing sensitive information.

Imagine you receive an email that looks like it's from your bank. It has the right logo and a professional tone. The email warns you about suspicious activity on your account and urges you to click a link to verify your identity immediately. You click the link, and it takes you to a website that looks identical to your bank's login page. If you enter your username and password, you've just handed over your credentials to a scammer.

Another major threat is malware, short for malicious software. This is any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, or network. Malware is a broad category that includes a few different types.

These breaches often happen to large companies that store information for millions of users. The stolen data is frequently sold online, where other criminals can buy it to commit fraud.

The Consequences of a Security Failure

What happens when your digital security fails? The consequences can range from minor annoyances to life-altering problems. Your social media account could be hacked to post spam, or worse, your bank account could be drained.

If a criminal gets enough of your personal information, they can commit identity theft. They could open new credit cards, take out loans, or even file tax returns in your name. Cleaning up the mess from identity theft can take years and be incredibly stressful.
