What is Diabetes?
At its core, diabetes is a condition where the amount of sugar, or glucose, in your blood is too high. Think of it like a traffic jam on a highway. Normally, glucose moves smoothly from your blood into your body's cells to be used for energy. In diabetes, this flow is disrupted, causing glucose to build up in the bloodstream.
Prediabetes is a warning sign. It means your blood glucose is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. It’s the yellow light before the red.
Your Body's Fuel
To understand diabetes, we first need to look at how your body handles energy. Most of the food you eat is broken down into glucose, a simple sugar that serves as the main source of fuel for your cells. It powers everything from your brain function to your muscle movements.
After you eat, glucose enters your bloodstream. But it can't just enter your cells on its own. It needs a key. That key is a hormone called insulin.
Insulin is made in the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. It’s released into the bloodstream in response to rising glucose levels.
Insulin travels through your blood to your cells and attaches to them, signaling the cells to open up and let glucose inside. This process lowers the amount of glucose in your blood and provides your cells with the energy they need to function.
Diabetes occurs when this system breaks down. There are two main ways this can happen.
When the System Fails
In Type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This means the body makes very little or no insulin. Without the “key,” glucose can't get into the cells and stays trapped in the blood.
In Type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn't make enough insulin or the cells stop responding to insulin properly. This is known as insulin resistance. The pancreas tries to compensate by making more insulin, but eventually, it can't keep up, and blood glucose levels rise.
Prediabetes is essentially an early stage of insulin resistance. Your body is starting to have trouble using insulin, but the problem isn't severe enough yet to be classified as full-blown diabetes.

A Growing Concern
Diabetes and prediabetes are major public health issues. Millions of people around the world are affected, and the numbers continue to grow. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 3 adults in the United States has prediabetes, and many don't even know it.
Because high blood sugar doesn't always cause obvious symptoms in the early stages, many people with prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes are unaware they have the condition.
Understanding the basics of how your body manages blood sugar is the first step in recognizing the importance of prevention and early detection. When glucose metabolism is working well, your body runs smoothly. When it's impaired, it sets the stage for health problems.
