The Russian Alphabet
Before you can read or speak Russian, you need to learn its alphabet. Russian uses the Cyrillic script, which might look intimidating at first glance, but it's more straightforward than you think. Many of its letters have direct counterparts in the Latin alphabet used for English.
The modern Russian alphabet has 33 letters. This includes 10 vowels, 21 consonants, and two signs (the "hard sign" and the "soft sign") that don't make sounds themselves but change the way other letters are pronounced. Let's get familiar with them.
Breaking Down the Letters
The easiest way to learn the alphabet is to break it into groups. Some letters will look and sound familiar, while others are completely new.
Group 1: True Friends. These letters look and sound almost exactly like their English counterparts. You already know these!
Аа, Кк, Мм, Оо, Тт
For example, the word кот is pronounced kot and means "cat." Simple enough.
Group 2: False Friends. These letters look like English letters, but they make completely different sounds. Be careful with these.
Вв, Ее, Нн, Рр, Сс, Уу, Хх
| Cyrillic | Sounds Like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Вв | 'v' as in vine | Not 'b' |
| Ее | 'ye' as in yes | Not 'e' |
| Нн | 'n' as in no | Not 'h' |
| Рр | A rolled 'r' sound | Not 'p' |
| Сс | 's' as in see | Not 'c' |
| Уу | 'oo' as in boot | Not 'y' |
| Хх | 'kh' (like the 'ch' in loch) | Not 'x' |
Group 3: New Shapes, Familiar Sounds. These letters look different, but their sounds exist in English.
Бб, Гг, Дд, Ёё, Жж, Зз, Ии, Йй, Лл, Пп, Фф, Ээ, Юю, Яя
Let's look at a few of these. Бб makes a 'b' sound. Дд makes a 'd' sound. Зз is 'z.' The letter Ии sounds like 'ee' in see, while Пп is the 'p' sound you were expecting from the Cyrillic Рр.
Group 4: The Uniques. These letters and signs are new in both look and sound or function.
Цц, Чч, Шш, Щщ, Ъъ, Ыы, Ьь
This group includes sounds like Шш ('sh' as in shoe) and Чч ('ch' as in chat). It also includes the two signs. The hard sign (Ъ) and soft sign (Ь) are modifiers. They have no sound on their own. The soft sign makes the preceding consonant 'soft' or palatalized, while the hard sign creates a brief pause between a consonant and a vowel.
A Brief History
The Cyrillic script has a rich history. It was developed in the 9th century by disciples of two Byzantine missionaries, Saints Cyril and Methodius. They created an alphabet to translate religious texts into the language of the Slavic people. The script they invented was actually Glagolitic, but Cyrillic, which was based on the Greek alphabet, eventually replaced it and spread across the Slavic world.
The alphabet was later simplified and modernized, most notably by Peter the Great in the 18th century, leading to the 33-letter version used in Russia today.
Learning the 33 letters of the Cyrillic alphabet is non-negotiable because it is the foundation of reading, writing, and pronunciation in Russian.
