What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a way for devices like your phone, laptop, or smart TV to connect to the internet and to each other without using physical cables. Think of it like a radio station, but instead of broadcasting music, it broadcasts data. Your device has a tiny receiver that tunes into the right frequency to send and receive information over the air.

The primary purpose of Wi-Fi is to create a Wireless Local Area Network, or WLAN. This is just a fancy term for a group of devices in a specific area—like your home, a coffee shop, or an office—that are all connected wirelessly.

How It Works

The heart of a wireless network is the router. It takes the wired internet connection coming into your home and converts it into radio waves. These waves carry data to and from your devices. When you browse a website on your phone, your phone sends a request as a radio signal to the router. The router then gets the information from the internet and sends it back to your phone, again as a radio signal.

This communication is a two-way street. Your devices aren't just passively listening; they're constantly talking back to the router, sending uploads, requests, and other information.

The Rules of the Airwaves

With so many devices trying to 'talk' at once, there needs to be a set of rules to keep everything organized. These rules are known as the IEEE 802.11 standards. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) creates these standards to ensure that all Wi-Fi enabled devices, regardless of the manufacturer, can communicate with each other seamlessly.

Think of the 802.11 standard as the common language that all Wi-Fi devices agree to speak.

Over the years, this language has evolved, with new versions offering faster speeds and better performance. You might have seen names like 802.11ac or 802.11ax. To make it simpler, these are now often given version numbers, like Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6. Each new version is an improvement on the last, allowing more data to be transferred more efficiently.

Your Home Network

Together, your router and all your connected devices form your home's Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The router acts as the central hub, managing all the traffic between your devices and the wider internet.

So, when you print a document from your laptop to a wireless printer, the data doesn't have to go out to the internet and back. It travels from your laptop, through the router, and directly to the printer, all within your local network.
