What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Two Kinds of AI

AGI doesn't exist yet, and building it is one of the most complex challenges in computer science.

AI Myths Debunked

The idea of intelligent machines can be unsettling, partly because of some common misunderstandings. Let's clear a few things up.

Myth 1: AI systems have consciousness, emotions, and intentions.

Reality: AI operates on data and algorithms. It can be trained to recognize and mimic human emotions, but it doesn't feel them. An AI that writes a sad story isn't experiencing sadness; it's just assembling words in a pattern it learned is associated with sad stories.

This is an important distinction. AI systems are tools, not conscious beings. They process information to achieve a goal, without the subjective experience that defines consciousness.

Myth 2: AI is always objective and unbiased.

Reality: AI learns from the data it's given. If that data contains human biases, the AI will learn and often amplify those biases. For example, if an AI is trained on historical hiring data where men were favored for engineering roles, it might learn to unfairly favor male candidates, even if gender isn't explicitly mentioned.

An AI is only as good as the data it learns from. Flawed data leads to flawed results.

Creating fair and ethical AI is a major focus for researchers. It requires carefully curating training data and building systems that are transparent and accountable.
