Artificial intelligence, or AI, isn't about conscious robots from science fiction. At its heart, AI is a set of instructions that allows a computer to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Think of it less like a thinking machine and more like a very sophisticated recipe book. A normal recipe book tells you exactly what to do. An AI-powered one could look at the ingredients you have and invent a new recipe on the spot.

This is different from simple automation. A calculator automates arithmetic, but it only follows pre-programmed rules. It can't learn or adapt. AI, on the other hand, can learn from new information. It excels at tasks like spotting trends, making predictions, and understanding language. This learning ability is what makes it 'intelligent'.

Almost all the AI you encounter today is what's known as Narrow AI (or Weak AI). This type of AI is designed to perform a single task extremely well. Your spam filter is a great example. It's brilliant at identifying junk email, but you can't ask it to write a poem or predict the stock market. It has one job and sticks to it.

You see Narrow AI everywhere:

• Streaming Services: When Netflix or Spotify suggests a new show or song, that's AI analysing your past choices to predict what you'll like next.
• Digital Assistants: Siri and Alexa use AI to understand your spoken commands and fetch the right information.
• Email: Your inbox automatically sorts emails into categories like 'Primary' and 'Promotions' using AI.

All these systems work by finding patterns in vast amounts of data. The AI behind Netflix's recommendations has analysed the viewing habits of millions of people. Through pattern recognition on this data, it learns that people who liked Movie A and Movie B also tend to like Movie C. It doesn't 'understand' the movies; it just understands the data connecting them.

A common misconception is that AI is just one step away from becoming self-aware and taking over the world. This idea belongs to a different concept called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI is the sci-fi dream of a machine with human-like consciousness and the ability to learn and perform any intellectual task a human can.

We are very far from creating AGI. The AI we have now is a tool. It's driven by mathematics and data, not feelings or ambitions. It's powerful because of its ability to process information at incredible speeds, but it doesn't understand context or possess common sense the way people do.
