Introduction to Decimals

Beyond Whole Numbers

We use whole numbers like 1, 2, and 10 all the time to count things. But what about the values that fall in between? How do you represent half a sandwich, or a price that isn’t an exact dollar amount?

That's where decimals come in. A decimal is a way to write a number that isn't whole. It represents a part, or a fraction, of a whole number. Think of it as a way to fill in the gaps on the number line between 0 and 1, or between 7 and 8.

For example, if you share a pizza equally between two people, you each get half. As a decimal, one half is written as 0.5.

Decimals are all around us. Your height might be 1.75 meters. A recipe might call for 2.5 cups of flour. The price of gas could be $3.89 per gallon. In each case, the decimal shows a value that is more than one whole number but less than the next one.

The Structure of a Decimal

Every decimal number has a few key parts. The most important is the decimal point—the small dot that separates the whole from the part.

Let's break that down:

  1. The Whole Number Part: This is the digit (or digits) to the left of the decimal point. It tells you how many complete wholes you have. In 2.75, the whole number part is 2.

  2. The Decimal Point: This is the dot that separates the whole number part from the decimal part.

  3. The Decimal Part: These are the digits to the right of the decimal point. They represent the fraction, or the piece of the next whole number. In 2.75, the decimal part is 75.

If a number has no whole part, we write a zero before the decimal point, like in 0.5. This makes it clear that we're talking about a value that is less than one whole. If a number is a whole number, like 4, you can think of it as having a decimal point at the end (4.0), but we usually don't write it.
