Finesse Your Edits with Dynamic Trimming

Moving beyond basic cuts means gaining precise control over the timing and flow of your timeline. Dynamic trimming tools let you adjust edit points with surgical precision, saving you the hassle of manually shuffling clips around. These tools change how clips interact with each other, allowing for faster and more intuitive edits.

Think of dynamic trimming as the difference between using a sledgehammer and a chisel. Both can break rock, but only one gives you the control to create a sculpture.

Let's explore the four main modes you'll use in DaVinci Resolve's Trim Edit Mode (shortcut 'T').

Ripple Trim

Adjusts a clip's In or Out point, causing all subsequent clips on the timeline to shift (or ripple) forward or backward to accommodate the change. This alters the total length of your timeline.

The Ripple Trim is your go-to for adjusting a clip's length without creating gaps. When you trim the end of a clip, everything after it moves left. When you extend it, everything moves right.

Next is the Roll Trim. This tool adjusts the edit point between two adjacent clips. As you extend one clip, the other gets shorter by the same amount. The total duration of the two clips—and the overall timeline—remains unchanged. It’s perfect for refining the timing of a cut without affecting anything else.

Use a Roll Trim when you think, "This reaction shot should come just a little bit sooner."

Finally, we have Slip and Slide trims. These are more advanced and change what the audience sees without altering clip durations.

  • Slip Trim: This changes the In and Out points of a clip within its existing space on the timeline. Imagine your clip is a window looking onto the full source footage. A slip trim moves the window left or right, showing a different portion of the source clip, but the window itself (the clip's duration on the timeline) doesn't move or resize.

  • Slide Trim: This moves a clip earlier or later in the timeline, between its two neighbours. As you slide the clip, the adjacent clips automatically trim themselves to fill the space. The duration of the sliding clip stays the same.

Animating with Keyframes

Static clips get the job done, but animation adds a professional touch. Keyframes are markers that define the starting and ending points of a smooth transition. You can animate almost any property in the Inspector panel: position, zoom, rotation, opacity, and even color correction grades.

To start, select a clip and go to the Inspector. Find a parameter you want to animate, like 'Zoom'. Move the playhead to where you want the animation to begin and click the diamond icon next to the parameter. This sets your first keyframe.

Then, move the playhead to where the animation should end, change the parameter's value, and a new keyframe is automatically added. DaVinci Resolve will now smoothly interpolate all the frames in between.

For example, to create a slow zoom-in on a subject, you'd set a keyframe for the 'Zoom' property at the start of the clip with a value of 1.000. Then, you'd move to the end of the clip and set another keyframe with a value of, say, 1.200. The result is a smooth, cinematic zoom that adds focus and energy to the shot.

You can add as many keyframes as you need. This allows you to create complex animations, like a picture-in-picture element that moves across the screen and then rotates out of view.

Manipulating Time with Speed Ramping

Speed ramping, or time remapping, is a powerful technique for creating dramatic slow-motion or fast-motion effects that vary over the duration of a single clip. Instead of making an entire clip 50% speed, you can transition smoothly from normal speed to slow-motion and back again.

This is the secret behind those epic action shots where time seems to slow down for a critical moment.

To access these tools, right-click a clip and select 'Retime Controls' (or press Ctrl+R/Cmd+R). A bar will appear below your clip. You can click the dropdown arrow to choose a constant speed change, or you can add speed points to create ramps.

To add a speed point, move your playhead to the desired location and click 'Add Speed Point' from the dropdown. Now you have separate speed segments on the clip. You can drag the handles on each segment up or down to change its speed independently. Resolve automatically creates a smooth transition between these points.

For even more control, right-click the clip again and choose 'Retime Curve'. This opens up a curve editor in the timeline. Here, the horizontal line represents 100% speed. You can add keyframes directly to this curve and manipulate the Bezier handles to create incredibly smooth and customisable speed ramps, changing the easing from a linear transition to a more organic one.
