What is Cybersecurity?

The CIA Triad

To understand how to protect information, we use a model called the CIA Triad. This isn't about spies; it's a cornerstone of information security. The letters stand for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability.

Let's break it down with an analogy: imagine sending a sensitive document through a trusted courier.

  • Confidentiality means the document is in a sealed envelope. Only the intended recipient can open and read it. If anyone else peeks, confidentiality is breached.

  • Integrity means the document arrives exactly as you sent it, with no words added, changed, or removed. The information is trustworthy.

  • Availability means the courier delivers the document to the right person at the right time. The information is accessible when it's needed.

A failure in any one of these areas is a security failure. The goal of cybersecurity is to maintain all three.

Common Threats and Attack Vectors

Cyber threats are potential dangers that can exploit vulnerabilities. The path a threat takes to attack a system is called an attack vector. This could be an email, a website, or even a USB drive. While there are countless types of attacks, most fall into a few common categories.

Cybersecurity isn't just one job; it's a diverse field with many roles. Professionals work to design, build, and maintain secure systems, but they also respond to incidents, test for vulnerabilities, and set security policies.

Here are a few examples:

  • Security Analyst: The frontline defender. They monitor networks for security events, investigate potential breaches, and are often the first to respond to an incident.

  • Penetration Tester: Also known as an "ethical hacker." They are hired to legally hack into an organization's systems to find weaknesses before malicious attackers do.

  • Security Architect: The planner. They design and build secure network structures from the ground up, ensuring security is a foundation, not an afterthought.

  • Chief Information Security Officer (CISO): The leader. This is a senior-level executive responsible for an organization's entire information security program.
