What Is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, and data from digital attacks, damage, or unauthorized access. In a world where everything from your banking information to your photos lives online, it's what keeps your digital life safe and private.

Think about all the devices you use every day: your phone, laptop, smart TV, and maybe even your refrigerator. They are all connected to the internet, creating a vast network of information. While this connectivity is convenient, it also creates opportunities for bad actors to steal data, disrupt services, or cause chaos. Cybersecurity works to secure these connections and protect the information flowing through them.

The goal isn't just to protect against hackers. It's about ensuring the systems we rely on every day—from power grids to hospitals—continue to function safely and reliably.

The CIA Triad

To understand cybersecurity, we need to know what it aims to protect. The goals of any security program can be broken down into three core principles, often called the CIA Triad.

Confidentiality, integrity, and availability—the CIA triad—are the three pillars of information security.

These three principles form the foundation of information security.

Confidentiality

Ensuring that information is not disclosed to unauthorized individuals, entities, or processes.

Think of it as secrecy. Your medical records, for example, should only be accessible to you and your doctor. If a hacker gains access to the hospital's database, confidentiality is breached.

Integrity

Maintaining the consistency, accuracy, and trustworthiness of data over its entire lifecycle.

This is all about trust. When you send $100 to a friend, you need to be sure that the amount doesn't change to $1,000 or $10 along the way. Integrity means the data hasn't been tampered with.

Availability

noun

Ensuring that information and services are accessible for use when needed by authorized users.

This means you can get to your information when you need it. If a website like your online bank is taken offline by an attack, you can't access your money. The service is no longer available.

Balancing these three principles is a constant challenge. For instance, making a system extremely confidential might make it less available. Good cybersecurity finds the right mix for the situation.

The Threat Landscape

Cyber threats are constantly evolving, coming from a variety of sources with different motivations. These threats can range from individual hackers looking for a challenge to organized crime groups seeking financial gain, and even nation-states conducting espionage. Understanding the common types of attacks is the first step toward defending against them.

These attacks exploit vulnerabilities in software, hardware, or even human behavior. Here are a few of the most common threats:

Roles and Ethics

Cybersecurity is a broad field with many different roles. A Security Analyst might monitor a network for suspicious activity, while a Penetration Tester (or ethical hacker) is hired to legally break into systems to find weaknesses before criminals do. A Security Architect designs secure systems from the ground up.

All these roles, however, are bound by a strong code of ethics. Cybersecurity professionals often have access to incredibly sensitive information. They must be trusted to use their skills responsibly—to protect data, not to exploit it.

Ethical behavior involves respecting privacy, acting with integrity, and adhering to laws and company policies. A breach of ethics could lead to significant harm, legal trouble, and a loss of trust that could end a career.

Our findings indicate that there are broad ethical challenges across the whole of cybersecurity, but also that different areas of cybersecurity can face specific ethical considerations for which more detailed guidance can help professionals in those areas.

As technology becomes more integrated into our lives, the importance of cybersecurity—and the people who work in it—will only continue to grow.
