Introduction to Cybersecurity
What is Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, and data from digital attacks, damage, or unauthorized access. Think of it as the digital equivalent of locking your doors at night. In our daily lives, we rely on technology for almost everything—banking, shopping, connecting with friends, and working. All of this activity creates vast amounts of digital information, or data.
This data, from your personal photos to your company's financial records, is valuable. Cybersecurity's main job is to keep that information safe. It protects our digital assets from those who might want to steal, change, or destroy them. Without it, our personal information, finances, and even national security would be at risk.
The goal isn't just to protect technology, but to protect the people and organizations that use it.
The Threat Landscape
A cyber threat is any malicious act that seeks to harm data, steal data, or disrupt digital life in general. The sources of these threats, often called threat actors, can range from individual hackers to organized crime groups and even nation-states. Their motivations are just as varied, including financial gain, espionage, or simple disruption.
Some common types of threats you might hear about include:
- Malware: Malicious software (like viruses or ransomware) designed to disrupt operations or gain unauthorized access to a computer system.
- Phishing: Tricking people into giving up sensitive information, like passwords or credit card numbers, by pretending to be a trustworthy source.
- Denial-of-Service (DoS) Attacks: Overwhelming a website or network with traffic to make it unavailable to its intended users.
The impact of these threats can be significant. For an individual, a successful attack could lead to identity theft, financial loss, or the compromise of personal files. For a business or government, the consequences can be even more severe, ranging from stolen intellectual property and massive financial penalties to a complete shutdown of operations and loss of public trust.

To understand cybersecurity, it helps to know a few key terms. These concepts form the foundation of how professionals think about protecting digital systems.
Asset

Anything of value to an organization or individual. In cybersecurity, this is often data, but it can also be computer systems, networks, or even reputation.
Vulnerability
noun
A weakness or flaw in a system's design, implementation, or operation that could be exploited to cause harm.
Threat
noun
Any potential danger that might exploit a vulnerability to breach security and cause harm to an asset.
Risk
noun
The potential for loss, damage, or destruction of an asset as a result of a threat exploiting a vulnerability.
These terms are all connected. A threat actor takes advantage of a vulnerability to attack an asset, creating a risk for the owner of that asset. Understanding this relationship is the first step in managing and reducing digital risk.
With these fundamentals in mind, we can begin to explore the specific ways attacks happen and, more importantly, how to build effective defenses against them.
