What is Cybersecurity?

Think of cybersecurity as the digital equivalent of a security system for your house. It's the practice of protecting your computers, networks, and data from theft, damage, or unauthorized access. Confidentiality is about keeping secrets. It's the principle that information should only be accessible to authorized individuals. Encryption is a common tool used to ensure confidentiality.

Integrity ensures that data is trustworthy. It means that the information is accurate, consistent, and has not been tampered with by an unauthorized person.

Availability means that information and systems are accessible to authorized users when they need them. A denial-of-service attack, for example, is a direct assault on availability.

Balancing these three principles is the core challenge of cybersecurity. Sometimes, strengthening one can weaken another. For instance, extremely tight confidentiality controls might make a system less available to those who need it.

An Ever-Changing Field

The one constant in cybersecurity is change. As technology evolves, so do the threats. Attackers constantly develop new methods, and defenders must adapt just as quickly. The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing has created new vulnerabilities that didn't exist a decade ago.

Cybersecurity is a continuous process that evolves with emerging threats.

This means that learning about cybersecurity isn't a one-time event. It requires ongoing awareness and education to stay ahead of new risks. What works today might be obsolete tomorrow, making it a dynamic and challenging field.
