Moist, warm winds blow in from the Caribbean Sea, carrying a huge amount of water vapor. When this air mass hits the eastern slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán, it has nowhere to go but up. As the air rises, it cools down. Just like a cold glass on a hot day, the water vapor in the cooling air condenses, transforming into tiny droplets that form clouds. These clouds then envelop the mountainsides at a certain elevation, creating the cloud forest.
The mountain forces warm, moist air upward. The air cools, the moisture condenses, and a forest is born in the clouds.
This isn't just rain. It's a persistent, dripping mist that keeps the entire ecosystem saturated with water. The leaves of the trees become surfaces for condensation, collecting water directly from the clouds and dripping it down to the forest floor below. This constant moisture is the lifeblood of the forest.

The combination of dramatic topography and a unique climate creates an explosion of biodiversity. The steep slopes and changing elevations of the Cordillera de Tilarán create countless microclimates.
