What Is Cryptocurrency?

At its heart, a cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual token that uses cryptography for security. Unlike the money in your bank account, it isn't issued by any central authority, like a government or bank. This makes it theoretically immune to government interference or manipulation.

The first and most well-known cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto. The goal was to create a new kind of electronic cash system that was completely decentralized, meaning no single entity had control.

The Blockchain Foundation

Imagine a shared digital notebook that's duplicated and spread across thousands of computers. Every time someone makes a transaction, a new entry, or "block," is added to the notebook. This block is then linked to the previous one, forming a "chain." This is the basic idea behind blockchain.

At its most basic level, a blockchain is a digital ledger maintained by a decentralized network of computers.

Each block contains a list of transactions, a timestamp, and a reference to the previous block. This structure makes it incredibly difficult to alter past transactions. If someone tried to change the information in one block, they would also have to change all the subsequent blocks in the chain across the entire network, which is practically impossible. This makes the blockchain secure and transparent.

Decentralization Is Key

The most revolutionary aspect of cryptocurrencies is their decentralized nature. Traditional financial systems are centralized. A bank, for example, holds all the power over your money. They can freeze your account, block transactions, and are vulnerable to single points of failure, like a server outage or a targeted hack.

Decentralization means control is distributed among all the network participants rather than being held by one central authority. This network of computers works together to verify and record transactions.

This distribution of power makes the system more democratic, transparent, and resistant to censorship or shutdowns.

But if no one is in charge, how does the network agree on which transactions are valid? This is where consensus mechanisms come in.

How the Network Agrees

A consensus mechanism is a set of rules that allows a decentralized network to agree on the state of the shared ledger. It's how everyone stays on the same page without a central coordinator. The two most common types are Proof of Work and Proof of Stake.
