This structure makes the system incredibly secure. To alter a transaction, a person would have to change the block it's in, as well as every single block that came after it, across thousands of computers simultaneously. It's a nearly impossible task, which is why blockchain is considered so robust.
A Whole Family of Coins
While Bitcoin was the pioneer, the crypto world has expanded dramatically. Today, there are thousands of different cryptocurrencies, which can be grouped into a few main categories.
Bitcoin (BTC): As the original, Bitcoin remains the most well-known cryptocurrency. Its primary purpose is to serve as a decentralized digital store of value and a medium of exchange, much like digital gold.
Altcoins: This term refers to any cryptocurrency that isn't Bitcoin. The most famous altcoin is Ethereum (ETH). Ethereum is different because it's not just a currency; it's also a platform for building decentralized applications using something called "smart contracts." Other altcoins might aim to be faster than Bitcoin, offer more privacy, or serve a specific niche.
Stablecoins: One of the challenges with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is their price volatility. Stablecoins solve this by pegging their value to a more stable asset, like the U.S. dollar or gold. For every one stablecoin issued, there's supposed to be an equivalent value held in reserve, keeping its price stable at, for example, $1.
More Than Just Money
The innovation of cryptocurrency isn't just about creating new forms of money. The underlying blockchain technology has opened the door to many other applications.
One of the biggest is Decentralized Finance (DeFi). DeFi aims to rebuild traditional financial systems like lending, borrowing, and trading without the need for central intermediaries like banks. It runs on smart contracts, which are essentially self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement written directly into code.
Another well-known application is Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). These are unique digital assets that represent ownership of a specific item or piece of content, like art, music, or a collectible. Because they live on a blockchain, their ownership and authenticity can be verified by anyone.
