Decentralization and Agreement
The most important feature of blockchain technology is decentralization. In the traditional financial system, banks and governments control your money. They maintain the ledger, approve transactions, and can freeze your account. Cryptocurrencies operate on a decentralized network, meaning no single entity is in charge.
This structure makes the system incredibly resilient. To shut down a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, you would need to shut down thousands of computers all over the world simultaneously. But if there's no one in charge, how does the network agree on which transactions are valid? How does it prevent fraud?
This is solved through a “consensus mechanism.” It's a set of rules that all the computers on the network use to agree on the state of the ledger. This ensures that every transaction is verified and that everyone has the same copy of the blockchain.
Coins vs. Tokens
While people often use “coin” and “token” interchangeably, they have distinct meanings in the crypto world. A coin, like Bitcoin or Ethereum, operates on its own blockchain. It acts as the native currency for that network.
A token, on the other hand, is built on top of an existing blockchain, most commonly Ethereum. Tokens don't have their own blockchain; they use the infrastructure of another platform. They generally fall into two categories.
