What Is Cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency is a type of digital or virtual money. It uses cryptography, a powerful form of encoding, to secure transactions. Think of it like cash, but it only exists online.
A key feature of most cryptocurrencies is their decentralized nature. This means they aren't controlled by any single entity, like a bank or a government. Instead, transactions are recorded on a global, public ledger that anyone can view. This structure removes the need for a traditional middleman.
The technology that makes this decentralized system possible is called the blockchain.
Blockchain is the foundational technology on which most cryptocurrencies are built.
The Blockchain Backbone
A blockchain is essentially a digital record book, or ledger, that is distributed across a vast network of computers. This ledger is made up of a growing list of records, called "blocks."
Each block contains a batch of recent transactions. Once a block is filled, it's linked to the previous block, forming a chain. This creates a chronological, unchangeable record of all transactions. It's like a shared digital notebook where new pages can be added, but old pages can never be torn out or altered.
Security is a core part of this design. Each block is linked to the one before it using a cryptographic principle called hashing. Hashing takes the data in a block and generates a unique, fixed-length string of characters, like a digital fingerprint. If even a tiny detail of the transaction data were changed, the hash would change completely. This makes the blockchain extremely secure and tamper-resistant.
Keeping Everyone Honest
Since there's no central authority to approve transactions, the network needs a way to agree on what's valid. This is achieved through a consensus mechanism. It's a set of rules that helps the network's participants agree on the state of the ledger.
There are two primary types of consensus mechanisms you'll encounter.
Proof of Work

A consensus mechanism where network participants, called miners, compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles. The first to solve the puzzle gets to add the next block to the blockchain and is rewarded with cryptocurrency.
Proof of Work (PoW) is the original consensus mechanism, famously used by Bitcoin. While very secure, it requires immense computational power and consumes a lot of energy.
Proof of Stake

A consensus mechanism where network participants, called validators, are chosen to create new blocks based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold and are willing to "stake" as collateral.
Proof of Stake (PoS) is a more energy-efficient alternative. Instead of mining, validators lock up some of their coins as a stake in the network. If they act honestly, they are rewarded. If they try to cheat, they risk losing their staked coins. This economic incentive keeps the network secure.
Types of Cryptocurrencies
While Bitcoin was the first, thousands of other cryptocurrencies have been created. These are often referred to as "altcoins," or alternative coins.
