This notebook is organized into 'blocks.' Each block contains a batch of recent transactions. Once a block is full, it's added to the end of the notebook, creating a chain of blocks. Hence, 'blockchain.'
Each new block is cryptographically linked to the one before it. This link is like a digital wax seal. If anyone tried to change a transaction in an old block, the seal would break, and everyone on the network would immediately know something was wrong. This makes the history of transactions permanent and unchangeable.
The Power of Decentralization
The final key piece of the puzzle is decentralization. In a traditional system, a bank holds the master copy of the transaction ledger. They are the central authority. You have to trust them to keep it accurate and secure.
Blockchain is different. The ledger isn't stored in one place. Instead, a copy is distributed across a vast network of computers. No single person, company, or government controls it. When a new transaction occurs, it's broadcast to the network, and the participating computers work together to verify it and add it to the chain.
Decentralization means there is no single point of failure. The network can continue to operate even if some computers go offline. It also makes the system resistant to censorship or control by any one party.
This structure is what allows cryptocurrencies to operate globally, 24/7, without needing traditional financial intermediaries. It’s a new way of building trust between people online.
