Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players. At its heart, it's a simple contest: one team tries to score runs, while the other tries to stop them. But its history and global reach make it much more than that.

Originating in southeast England sometime in the 16th century, cricket evolved from a simple countryside pastime into a complex sport with a rich tradition. Today, it’s the second most popular sport in the world, captivating billions of fans. It holds a special significance in many countries, including England, Australia, India, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.

The main goal in cricket is straightforward: score more runs than your opponent. A match is divided into parts called innings. During an inning, one team bats while the other team bowls and fields.

The batting team sends two players out to score runs. The fielding team has all 11 players on the field, trying to prevent runs and dismiss the batters. Once a team's innings is over (usually after ten batters are out), the roles reverse. The fielding team gets its turn to bat and chase the score set by the first team.

A cricket match takes place on a large, circular or oval-shaped grass field. The edge of the field is marked by a rope or line called the boundary.

In the center of the field is a rectangular area of closely mown grass called the pitch. This is where the core action happens. At each end of the pitch stands a wicket.

The bowler from the fielding team runs up and delivers the ball from one end of the pitch to the batter, who stands at the opposite end, guarding the wicket. The entire game revolves around the contest between the bowler trying to hit the wicket and the batter trying to defend it and score runs.
