Some ideas in math are so fundamental they show up everywhere. The difference between even and odd numbers is one of them. The concept is as simple as pairing things up.
Imagine you have a handful of marbles. If you can group all of them into pairs with none left over, you have an even number of marbles. But if you always end up with one lone marble after making all the pairs you can, you have an odd number.
This simple idea of pairing is the key to telling even and odd numbers apart.
Defining Even and Odd
In math, we have a more precise way to say the same thing. An even number is any number that can be divided by 2 with nothing left over. An odd number is any number that has a remainder of 1 when you divide it by 2.
Even
adjective
A whole number that is divisible by 2 with no remainder. It can be represented as 2k, where k is any integer.
For example, 8 is even because you can split it into two equal groups of 4. There's no remainder.
Odd
adjective
A whole number that has a remainder of 1 when divided by 2. It can be represented as 2k + 1, where k is any integer.
The number 5 is odd. If you try to divide it by 2, you get two groups of 2, but you have that one leftover marble.
The Last Digit Trick
What about bigger numbers, like 54 or 1,297? You don't need to do any division to figure out if they're even or odd. There's a much simpler way: just look at the very last digit.
A number's status as even or odd depends entirely on its final digit.
It doesn't matter how many digits a number has. The rule is always the same. If the last digit is even, the whole number is even. If the last digit is odd, the whole number is odd.

So, 358 is an even number because it ends in 8. The number 941 is odd because it ends in 1. It's a simple trick that works every time. Understanding this is a key step before we start counting in new ways.
