We divide them into two groups: the personal (or inner) planets and the collective (or outer) planets.

Jupiter and Saturn are the bridge between the personal and collective realms. Jupiter expands what it touches, bringing opportunity and wisdom. Saturn contracts, bringing structure and demanding maturity.

The final three—Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—are known as the transpersonal planets. They operate on a level beyond the ego, dissolving boundaries and forcing profound, often uncomfortable, evolution.

A planet's expression isn't always the same. Its strength and effectiveness change depending on the zodiac sign it's in. A planet in a sign that complements its natural energy operates with ease and power. This concept is called Essential Dignity It's a system for evaluating how comfortable a planet is in a particular sign.

The two main states of strength are Rulership and Exaltation. Their opposites are Detriment and Fall.

Rulership and Detriment Every sign has a ruling planet—a planet whose core nature is a perfect match for the sign's style. When a planet is in the sign it rules, it's 'at home'. It has all the resources it needs and can express its energy purely and powerfully. Mars in Aries, for example, is direct, courageous, and full of initiative.

The sign opposite a planet's home sign is its Detriment. Here, the planet is a guest in an unfamiliar house where the rules are completely different. It has to work harder and its expression can become awkward or challenging. Mars in Libra, the sign of balance and harmony, struggles with its direct, assertive nature and can become indecisive or passive-aggressive.

Exaltation and Fall Exaltation is like being an honoured guest. The planet is not at home, but it's in a sign that highly values its specific talents and gives it a platform to shine. The Sun is exalted in Aries. While the Sun rules Leo (identity), Aries (initiative) gives the Sun's vitality and purpose an extra boost of enthusiastic, pioneering energy. It's the Sun at its most heroic.

The sign opposite a planet's exaltation is its Fall. Here, the planet is in a difficult environment where its gifts are unappreciated or misunderstood. It struggles to express itself and its energy can be weakened or distorted. The Sun is in Fall in Libra. The Sun wants to shine from a singular, central point, but relationship-focused Libra asks it to constantly compromise and share the spotlight, dimming its radiant self-expression.
