The goal is to shed accumulated fatigue and allow your body to fully recover and adapt, ensuring you're fresh, strong, and ready to perform on race day. Many runners fear losing fitness during the taper, but the opposite is true. A proper taper maximizes your fitness gains.
Tapering is not about stopping; it's about reducing volume while maintaining intensity.
During the taper, you'll reduce your overall weekly mileage significantly, perhaps by 20-30% two weeks out and 50% or more in the final week. However, it's crucial to maintain some intensity.
