What Is Compression Therapy?
Compression therapy is a technique that uses controlled pressure to increase blood flow in your limbs and support your veins. Think of it as a therapeutic squeeze. It's a common tool in physiotherapy for managing conditions where fluid pools in the body's tissues, a problem broadly known as edema.
This fluid buildup can happen for several reasons. For example, in chronic venous insufficiency, the veins in your legs struggle to push blood back up to the heart. In lymphedema, the lymphatic system—your body's waste removal service—is blocked or damaged, causing lymph fluid to collect. Compression is also used to manage swelling after surgery or an injury.
The main goal is to gently push stagnant fluid out of the limbs and back into circulation, reducing swelling and improving overall function.
How Compression Works
Applying external pressure to a limb has a few key physiological effects. The pressure helps shrink the diameter of major veins, which in turn increases the speed and volume of blood flow back toward the heart. This is called enhancing venous return.
Better blood flow takes the strain off overworked veins. In healthy veins, tiny valves open to let blood flow toward the heart and close to stop it from flowing backward. When veins widen, these valves may not close properly, causing blood to leak back and pool. Compression helps the valves function correctly again.
This pressure also helps the lymphatic system. This network of vessels runs alongside your blood vessels and is responsible for draining excess fluid, waste, and proteins from your tissues. By reducing swelling and supporting the surrounding muscles, compression makes it easier for lymphatic fluid to move, preventing it from accumulating.
The combined effect is a reduction in edema. Less excess fluid in the tissues means less swelling, which can relieve pain, increase mobility, and help prevent complications like skin breakdown or infections.
It can increase blood circulation, support lymphatic flow (the system that drains leaked tissue fluid back into the bloodstream), ease tension and promote healing.
Tools of the Trade
Compression therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. A physiotherapist will recommend a specific type and level of compression based on the condition being treated, the limb's shape, and the patient's ability to apply it. The pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg), just like blood pressure.
