Beyond the Building Blocks

You already know that systems are made of individual parts. A car has an engine, wheels, and a chassis. An economy has producers, consumers, and regulators. But listing the parts doesn't explain how the system behaves. The most interesting, and often unpredictable, outcomes arise from how these parts interact.

Moving from a modular to a holistic perspective means shifting your focus from the components themselves to the relationships between them. It’s like graduating from knowing the names of all the chess pieces to understanding the strategic dance they perform on the board. The real challenge isn't just identifying a variable; it's understanding how a change in that variable will ripple through the entire interconnected web.

Mapping the Connections

To analyze a system, you first need to see it. Interdependency mapping is the process of visualizing the network of causes and effects. Instead of a simple A causes B flowchart, we look for all the connections, direct and indirect. One of the most effective tools for this is the (CLD).

A CLD doesn't bother with precise numbers. Its goal is to sketch the structure of the system and identify the critical relationships that drive its behavior. It shows how variables influence each other, revealing the underlying feedback loops that we'll explore next.
