What is a Time Interval?

A time interval is simply the amount of time that passes between a starting point and an ending point. Think of it as the length of an event, like a movie, a class, or a bus ride. To find this duration, we measure the difference between the end time and the start time.

Just as we can measure the distance between two points on a map, we can measure the time between two moments. We usually express this measurement in hours and minutes.

Intervals Within a Single Day

Let's start with the simplest case: finding the duration between two times on the same day. The method is to subtract the start time from the end time, handling the minutes and hours separately.

For example, what is the time interval between 2:10 PM and 5:45 PM?

First, subtract the minutes: $45 - 10 = 35$ minutes. Next, subtract the hours: $5 - 2 = 3$ hours.

The interval is 3 hours and 35 minutes.

It gets a little trickier when the minute value of the start time is greater than the minute value of the end time. In these situations, we need to borrow from the hour.

Imagine you need to find the time between 9:50 AM and 11:20 AM. We can't subtract 50 minutes from 20 minutes directly. So, we borrow 1 hour from the 11 hours, which gives us an extra 60 minutes.

Now the subtraction is straightforward.

Subtract the minutes: $80 - 50 = 30$ minutes. Subtract the hours: $10 - 9 = 1$ hour.

The total time interval is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

When the start time's minutes are larger than the end time's, borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from the end time's hour before you subtract.

Intervals Across Multiple Days

What if an event starts on one day and ends on another? To calculate this, we break the problem into smaller parts:

  1. Calculate the time from the start time to midnight on the first day.
  2. Add the time from midnight to the end time on the final day.
  3. If the interval spans more than one midnight, add 24 hours for each full day in between.

Let's find the time from Monday at 10:00 PM to Tuesday at 2:00 AM.

Step 1: Time until midnight on Monday. Midnight is 12:00 AM, or the end of the day. The time from 10:00 PM to midnight is 2 hours.

Step 2: Time from midnight on Tuesday. The time from midnight to 2:00 AM is 2 hours.

Step 3: Add them together. The total interval is 2 hours+2 hours=4 hours2 \text{ hours} + 2 \text{ hours} = 4 \text{ hours}.

Now for a more complex example: from Friday at 8:30 PM to Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Part 1: Time on Friday. From 8:30 PM to midnight. Midnight is 12:00 AM, or 11 hours and 60 minutes. $11:60 - 8:30 = 3$ hours and 30 minutes.

Part 2: Full days in between. Saturday is one full day between Friday and Sunday. That's 24 hours.

Part 3: Time on Sunday. From midnight to 11:00 AM is 11 hours.

Part 4: Total duration. Now, we add all the parts together: (3 hr 30 min) + (24 hr) + (11 hr) = 38 hours and 30 minutes.
