The Art of Combination

The secret to joining word parts smoothly is the combining vowel, which is usually an 'o'. This vowel acts as a grammatical glue, making terms easier to pronounce. The rule is straightforward: you use the combining vowel when the part you're adding starts with a consonant. If it starts with a vowel, you leave the 'o' out.

Putting it together in reverse order tells the story: choledoch/o (common bile duct) + lith/o (stone) + -tomy (incision). The word means 'an incision into the common bile duct to remove a stone'. When building, you start with the location and add the modifiers.

Let’s try another: . This term describes a common gynaecological procedure. It combines two roots, salping/o (fallopian tube) and oophor/o (ovary), with the suffix -ectomy (surgical removal). The 'o' connects the two roots. The logic is clear: the surgical removal of a fallopian tube and an ovary.
