Understanding Clever
What Is Clever?
Think about all the different websites and apps a student might use in a single school day. There's one for math, another for reading, one for science simulations, and maybe another for turning in homework. Each one often requires its own username and password. Keeping track of all those logins can be a major headache for students, teachers, and parents.
Clever was created to solve this exact problem. Founded in 2012, it’s a platform that acts as a central hub for a school's digital learning tools. Instead of juggling dozens of passwords, students and teachers can access all their applications through a single, secure portal.
One Login to Rule Them All
The core feature of Clever is single sign-on, or SSO. This technology allows a user to log in once and gain access to multiple independent software systems without being prompted to log in again. For a school, this is a game-changer. A student can log into their Clever Portal and see icons for every learning app they need, from Google Classroom to Khan Academy. One click takes them straight into the application, no new password required.
This simplifies the classroom experience, saving valuable instruction time that might otherwise be spent on forgotten passwords and login issues.
Clever also handles the complex, behind-the-scenes work of securely transferring student data between the school's information system and the various applications. This ensures that class rosters are always up-to-date and that sensitive student information is handled safely, according to district policies.
Clever's Growth and Impact
By streamlining the use of technology in the classroom, Clever quickly became an essential tool for schools across the United States. Today, it is used by approximately 65% of K-12 school districts in the country, serving around 20 million students and teachers every month.
The platform's success and widespread adoption caught the attention of other major players in the educational technology space. In 2021, Clever was acquired by Kahoot!, the company behind the popular quiz-based learning platform. This move brought two widely used educational tools under one roof, with the goal of creating a more comprehensive suite of services for schools worldwide.
Clever's story highlights a key shift in education: as more learning moves online, the need for simple, secure, and centralized systems becomes more important than ever.
