The CELPIP Speaking Test
The CELPIP Speaking Test measures your ability to communicate in English in everyday situations. It's done on a computer, where you'll listen to prompts and record your answers using a headset. The entire speaking section takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
The test is designed to reflect communication in a Canadian context. It consists of eight different tasks, each with its own preparation and speaking time. Let's break them down.
The Eight Speaking Tasks
Each task in the CELPIP Speaking Test simulates a real-life scenario. You'll do things like give advice, describe a picture, and share your opinion. The timing is strict, so it's crucial to know what to expect for each part.

Note that Task 1 is just for practice and is not scored. It's there to help you get comfortable with the format and check your microphone volume.
How You're Scored
Your responses are evaluated by trained raters based on four key areas. Understanding these criteria helps you know what to focus on when you practice.
Here are the four performance standards:
- Content/Coherence: Is your response clear, organized, and well-developed? Are your ideas easy to follow?
- Vocabulary: Do you use a good range of words and expressions correctly and effectively?
- Listenability: How easily can the rater understand you? This includes your pronunciation, intonation, and fluency.
- Task Fulfillment: Did you do everything the prompt asked for? Did you answer the question completely and stay on topic?
Familiarise yourself with the test format and the timing of each part of the speaking and writing tests.
Your score for each task is converted into a CELPIP Level, which ranges from 3 to 12. These levels directly correspond to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), the national standard used in Canada to describe the English language ability of adult immigrants.
For example, a CELPIP Level 7 is equivalent to a CLB Level 7. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses these CLB levels to determine language eligibility for various immigration programs. Knowing the CLB level you need is the first step in setting your CELPIP score goal.
