Getting Started with CapCut
CapCut is a free and popular video editing app that makes it easy to create professional-looking videos on your phone or computer. It’s packed with features, but getting started is simple once you know your way around the main screen.
When you open a new project, you'll see a few key areas:
- The Preview Window: This is at the top of the screen. It shows you what your video looks like as you edit.
- The Timeline: This is the main workspace at the bottom. It's where you'll arrange your video clips, audio, and effects in the order you want them to appear.
- The Toolbar: Located just above the timeline, this bar contains all your primary editing tools, like trimming, adding text, and applying effects.
Making Your First Edits
First, you need to bring your video clips and photos into the app. Tap the 'New Project' button, then select the media you want to use from your device's gallery. Once imported, your clips will appear one after another in the timeline.
Now you can start shaping your story using three basic tools.

Adding Flair with Text and Transitions
Once your clips are in order, you can add text and effects to make your video more engaging. To add text, move the playhead (the vertical white line on the timeline) to where you want the text to appear and select 'Text' from the toolbar. You can type your message, then customize its font, color, size, and animation.
Transitions are effects that smooth the change from one clip to the next. To add one, tap the small white square that appears between two clips on the timeline. This will open a menu of transition options, like a simple fade or a more dynamic swipe. Choose one to create a seamless flow in your video.
Basic editing—like splicing, adding subtitles, adjusting brightness, or overlaying music—often elevates your content from “rough clip” to “scroll-stopping gem.”
Applying a few simple effects can also change the mood. Select a clip, then look for an 'Effects' option in the toolbar to browse different styles and filters.
