Think about the technology you use every day. How much of it demands your attention? Your phone buzzes with notifications. Your laptop chimes with new emails. Pop-up ads cover the article you’re trying to read. Most technology is designed to grab and hold our focus, often creating a sense of anxiety and information overload.
Calm technology is the antidote. It’s a design philosophy that pushes technology into the background of our lives. Instead of constantly demanding our attention, it provides information in a seamless, unobtrusive way, only coming to the forefront when it’s truly needed.
The goal is to create technology that becomes a peaceful part of our lives, not a source of stress.

An Idea Ahead of Its Time
The concept of calm technology isn’t new. It grew out of an idea called “ubiquitous computing,” or “ubicomp,” developed by computer scientist Mark Weiser and his colleagues at Xerox PARC in the late 1980s. This was long before smartphones existed. Weiser envisioned a future where computing was woven into the fabric of everyday life—embedded in walls, clothing, and furniture.
He famously said, “The most profound technologies are those that disappear.” He believed that as technology became more integrated into our environment, it should also become invisible, working quietly in the background. It shouldn't require us to sit at a desk and stare at a screen. Instead, it should enhance our experience of the world without distracting us from it.
Decades later, cyborg anthropologist Amber Case revisited and expanded on these ideas in her book, Calm Technology. She argued that in a world now saturated with attention-hungry devices, Weiser's vision is more important than ever. Case translated his academic concepts into practical design principles that can help us build a less intrusive, more helpful technological future.
Principles of Calm Design
So, how do we design technology to be calm? Amber Case outlines several core principles. These guidelines help creators think differently about how a device or application communicates with its user.
A great example of these principles in action is a tea kettle. It works quietly in your peripheral hearing, and only when the water is boiling does it make a loud noise to get your full attention. It uses the right amount of attention for the right task.
Ambient and Aware
Closely related to calm technology is the idea of ambient technology. This refers to systems that are embedded in our environment, capable of sensing our presence and needs, and responding intelligently. If calm technology is the why (to reduce cognitive load), ambient technology is the how (by integrating into our surroundings).

Think of motion-sensor lights that turn on when you enter a room and off when you leave. You don't interact with them directly. They are simply part of the environment, anticipating a need and meeting it without requiring a single command. The best ambient technologies are also calm technologies. They work so well that you forget they are even there.
