Understanding Net Worth

What is Net Worth?

Your net worth is a simple snapshot of your financial health. It’s the value of everything you own, minus everything you owe. Think of it like a balance. On one side, you have your assets—things with monetary value. On the other side are your liabilities, which are your debts.

Total Assets − Total Liabilities = Net Worth

If what you own is worth more than what you owe, you have a positive net worth. If your debts are greater than your assets, you have a negative net worth. It’s not a judgment, just a number that tells you where you stand financially at a single point in time.

asset

noun

Anything of monetary value that is owned by an individual or company.

liability

noun

A financial obligation or debt owed to another party.

Net Worth vs. Income

It's easy to confuse net worth with income, but they measure two very different things. Income is the money you earn over a period of time, like your monthly salary. Net worth is your financial position at one specific moment.

Income is a flow of money, like a river. Net worth is a snapshot of the lake the river flows into.

Someone can have a high income but a low or even negative net worth. Imagine a doctor who earns $250,000 a year but has $400,000 in student loans and other debts. Their income is high, but their net worth is negative.

Conversely, a retiree might have a low income from a pension but a high net worth because they own their home outright and have significant savings. Their assets are high and their liabilities are low.

Why It Matters

Tracking your net worth helps you understand your financial progress. Is it growing over time? If so, you're likely making good financial decisions. If it's shrinking, it might be a signal to adjust your spending or saving habits.

Knowing this single number provides clarity. It helps you set financial goals, whether that’s saving for retirement, paying down debt, or investing for the future. It’s the compass that guides your long-term financial journey, showing you where you are and helping you chart a course to where you want to go.
