An Origin Story

Genetic evidence suggests that the common ancestor of Cannabis and Humulus lived on the Tibetan Plateau. As the plateau rose, it created a variety of new environments, pushing the single ancestral species to adapt in different directions. This is a classic example of niche theory, where organisms evolve to fill specific roles in an ecosystem.

Cannabis specialized in the uplifted, dry, and disturbed alluvial soils. In contrast, Humulus thrived in the wetter, more stable environments of the region's lowlands. This split in habitat preference drove their physical and chemical evolution down separate paths.

Both genera also underwent a major structural change. Their shared ancestor was likely a tree-like, or arboreal, plant. Over millions of years, both lineages transitioned into the smaller, herbaceous forms we see today. This shift was a crucial adaptation to their changing environments.
